Bright Idea: How LED Lighting Can Help You Save Money

If you're looking for one of the easiest and most affordable ways to reduce your power bill, switching to LED light bulbs is a great place to start.

According to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), LED lighting uses up to 85% less electricity than traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs, while lasting much longer. In fact, a typical LED bulb can last around 30,000 hours compared to around 2,000 hours for an old-style incandescent bulb.

Small Change, Big Savings

Replacing your household light bulbs with LEDs may seem like a small change, but the savings can add up quickly. EECA estimates that every incandescent bulb replaced with an LED can save between $100 and $300 over its lifetime through lower electricity costs and fewer replacements.

LED bulbs are also widely available and relatively inexpensive to purchase, making them one of the most cost-effective energy efficiency upgrades for Kiwi households.

Choosing the Right LED

When shopping for LEDs, there are a few things to consider:

  • Brightness: Look for the lumen rating rather than the wattage.

  • Colour: Warm white lighting is generally best for living areas and bedrooms, while cool white can work well in garages, workshops, and task-focused spaces.

  • Fitting Type: Check whether your light fitting requires a screw or bayonet bulb.

  • Dimmability: If you have dimmer switches, make sure you choose dimmable LED bulbs.

More Than Just Lower Power Bills

LED lighting doesn't just save money. Because LEDs produce much less heat than older bulbs, they can also be safer in many situations. They provide instant brightness, cope well with frequent switching on and off, and are available in a wide range of styles to suit every room in the home.

There are environmental benefits too. EECA estimates that if every New Zealand household switched to LED lighting, the country could avoid around 45,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

A Simple Upgrade Worth Making

Unlike many home improvements, switching to LED lighting doesn't require a major investment or renovation. It's a quick, affordable upgrade that can start saving you money immediately while making your home more energy efficient.

Whether you're replacing one bulb or updating your entire home, LED lighting is a simple step that can make a real difference to your power bill.
