Heat pumps are one of the most efficient ways to heat your home, but many people aren't sure what temperature they should set them to.
When it's cold outside, it can be tempting to turn the heat pump up as high as it will go. However, setting your heat pump to 30°C won't warm your home any faster than setting it to a comfortable temperature. It simply means the unit will keep running until it reaches that higher temperature, using more energy along the way.
The Recommended Temperature
For most homes, a setting between 18°C and 22°C provides a good balance between comfort and efficiency. Many people find 20°C is a comfortable temperature during winter.
Keeping your home at a consistent temperature is often more efficient than constantly turning the heat pump on and off throughout the day.
Make the Most of Your Heat Pump
To get the best performance from your heat pump:
Keep doors and windows closed while heating.
Close curtains once the sun goes down.
Clean filters regularly.
Keep furniture away from the indoor unit so air can circulate freely.
Use the timer function if your unit has one.
When Your Home Still Feels Cold
If your heat pump seems to be working hard but the house still feels chilly, heat may be escaping through draughts, uninsulated ceilings, or single-glazed windows.
Addressing these issues can make a significant difference to both comfort and power costs.
Warmth and Efficiency Go Hand in Hand
A well-maintained heat pump used at the right temperature can keep your home warm, healthy, and affordable to run throughout winter.
